NaPoWriMo 13

April 13, 2012

NaPoWriMo websiteTechnology: It’s been a pleasure to start reading the poems and other contributions that other bloggers have been sharing.  There’s a lot of variety out there.  However, I still haven’t invested the time to discover just what else WordPress can do, particularly in relation to Twitter.  I’m not a big Twitterer or Tweeter, but I understand that there are links to my poems via this route.  If anyone is following me on Twitter can they let me know as I don’t know how to test it.

People: The Easter holidays are drawing to a close and as usual I feel as knackered as I did at the beginning.  Instead of all day meetings its been all day laundry sessions, tidying the house etc.  The kids are tired as well due to sleep overs, parties and socialising with friends.  It’s time to reign back for all of us so we can get ready for starting fresh on Monday.

Poem:  Compared to some people I’m quite social.  I don’t particularly mind big parties but there are many people who hate them.  Particularly their superficiality especially when social networking is involved.  How well kids are doing, holiday/job/purchasing one-upmanship.  Rather like a living version of those Christmas letters which seem so popular.  You know ‘Elizabeth is doing very well in Violin but we’re a little disappointed that  she only achieved grade 8 when she was 9’.  All valuable information about how people actually are goes missing.  This poem is about that*.

Mine’s bigger than yours

at  the parties
where pretty people play
at dressing up
and comparing toys
and achievements
conversation is forced
in relievo
all that is heard is superficiality
which suits those people
that have invested in
their outward appearance
It’s status updates
bullet points of bullshit
I’m reducing myself
to a list of statements
my unique selling points
and shout above the throng
about how wonderful life is
playing the game where
subtlety is removed
like the party music
room bouncing bass
not nuanced melody

*Obviously I have to include the fact that I’m not above this myself, it’s just that other people are worse – of course 😀
