Poem:  Today’s prompt is an elegy.  I’ve done mine about spontaneity.  Spontaneity is the preserve of the childless, not the family man.  Our spontaneity has to be planned.  There are other things but spontaneity is usually good, apart from the combustion bit.  There is a nagging undertow and that is I don’t allow myself much time to write the poems.  I leave them until the last thing at night.  I did write one poem in the morning which I thought was an improvement.  But I need to balance this spontaneity with a practical understanding that if I give the words some air, they’ll probably improve.

spontaneous elegy for spontaneity

This was spontaneity’s death.
More sudden than expected
we were hardly prepared
but went along
would it be dramatic?
It was,
as you might expect
with spontaneity.

We mourned spontaneity
and filled our lives instead
with predictability and his
practical cousin responsibility
who with measured patience
offset our grief with the sop
of knowing what we’d
be doing next and why.

But spontaneity
your missed as much
as a lovers weekend,
as cast off inhibitions
a 2 am drive to the coast
I remember your impish face.
The vibrant joy of our existence
and still listen for your echoes.
