Back again

September 4, 2012

It’s been a while.  I have been performing my poetry and the driver that says ‘write more stuff!’ has been extremely active, but my pen has rarely made contact with paper.  There has been some developments and below are two poems.  The first is more an Eulogy, the second more an Elegy.  Both referring to the same dead rat.  I’ve seen a number recently, I don’t know why but there they are.  The most recent one had been run over.  The car’s tyre marks clearly imprinted into it’s fur.  And as much as I have no particular affection for rats I thought, what a way to go.  Imagine being burst.  Consequently I was more sympathetically disposed toward this particular one and felt compelled to write in recognition of it’s passing.  However there is a paradox that exists in me.  As serious as I was, my more impish nature needed to be aired also, which is why they differ so much in tone.  Anyway, I hope that for the few people that may still be informed when this blog is updated, you enjoy them.

Eulogy for a road kill rat
I pray for your spirit rat.
I pray that Mushika intercedes
as Ganesh rides upon his back.
To ask that the pain of your death
will be equal with the pleasure
of your next life. That you may join your
brothers and sisters
the band of little children
in Karni Mata
Scampering in the
cool marble temple
over the feet of
grateful pilgrims.
Their gifts to you
fresh milk, sweetmeats
given freely
so you may bestow
your blessings
upon them. And that I in acknowledging
your transition
the Gods will look
in favour upon the choice of my own end.

Elegy for a road kill rat
I can tell by the treadmarks
left on your back
the spread of your guts squashed
on the tarmac.
The evidence is in
the imprint is clear
painful, ironic
it was a Goodyear.
