NaPoWriMo April 6

April 6, 2013

napo2013buttonHere in the UK its the Easter holidays so all the kids are at home.  This means an increase in the amount of domestic chores.  More clothes need washing, more meals need cooking, more plates need washing, more things need to picked up off the floor and tidied away.  The kids do have certain responsibilities which they respond to with the enthusiasm of a vegan to a rare 12 ounce steak.  The house takes a  lot of wear and tear and unfortunately whilst I admire the skills of practical men, I lack the interest of acquiring them for myself.  As such I’m a reluctant DIYer.  In regards to keeping his house spick and span my brother in law takes a long-term view,  saying that “I’ll tidy up when the kids leave”.  I do have some standards though.  I must have at least one room tidy so that I can go and hide in it and gather the strength to tackle the next set of domestic chores.

Domestic fatigue

The dust upon the dado rail

the cobwebs on the ceiling

the fingerprints upon the doors

obvious and unappealling.

the ineffective dishwasher

welds old food upon the plates

the stickiness of the toilet

floor causes my spirit to deflate

The wear and tear of family life

The atrophy of my home.

The burden of domestic pride

I’ve abandoned to rot alone.
